At VegClub, we’re all about great vegan food—but we also love a stylish stay, especially when it includes plant-based meals and cosy, eco-friendly rooms. This time, our team had the pleasure of staying at The Earlsdale—a vegan friendly B&B located in the charming town of Ilfracombe, North Devon.
With the growing number of vegan and plant-based hotels across the UK—and Europe, conscious travellers now have more options for sustainable and comfortable getaways. The rise of these eco-friendly stays reflects a growing trend where sustainability and comfort are perfectly in harmony.
A stylish stay: Victorian charm meets modern comfort
Located in Ilfracombe on North Devon’s rugged coast, The Earlsdale is a boutique bed and breakfast offering an extraordinary blend of style, comfort and sustainability. Catering to all types of holidaymakers, it ensures that every guest feels welcome.
Stepping into The Earlsdale feels like arriving at your coolest friend’s home. This refurbished Victorian gem retains its original charm—think intricate tiled floors, stained glass windows and period features—seamlessly blended with bold, contemporary décor. Vibrant wallpaper, elegant furniture and an endearing collection of greyhound portraits set the tone for a unique stay.
Upon arrival, you’ll receive a warm welcome from owners Lewis and James, along with a form to place your breakfast order, ensuring your morning starts exactly as you like it. You might even catch a glimpse of their adorably shy greyhound, Scooby!
The Earlsdale’s eight guest rooms are designed for relaxation, with thoughtful touches throughout. Our team stayed in the ‘Superking Deluxe En Suite’—which features large bay windows that flood the room with light. Striking gold accents, a plush seating area and statement wallpaper give the room a luxurious feel, while the enormous, unbelievably comfortable bed ensures a restful night’s sleep.
Sustainability at heart: Eco-friendly comfort
The Earlsdale
Sustainability is at the heart of everything at The Earlsdale. Choose from a selection of plant-based milks to enjoy with locally-sourced Exmoor tea and homemade vegan biscuits in your room. Plastic is nowhere to be found—fridges are stocked with glass water bottles and eco-friendly packaging is used for everything from soap to loo roll. Electric vehicle drivers will appreciate the convenient charging ports, making green travel a breeze.

Once you’ve settled in, explore the lush garden with its jungle-like greenery. Lounge on the sun-soaked deck with a good book or enjoy a drink by the pond. The honesty bar is another thoughtful touch, offering a range of locally-sourced wines, beers and spirits, including Atlantic Spirit gin from nearby Newquay. Guests simply note their drinks and settle the tab at checkout.
Exploring the local scene: Ilfracombe and beyond
The Earlsdale
The Earlsdale’s location makes it easy to explore the stunning local scenery. A short walk takes you to the famous Tunnels Beaches, where hand-carved passages lead to a secluded Victorian tidal pool. Alternatively, stroll along the coastal path to Ilfracombe’s picturesque harbour, dominated by Damien Hirst’s striking sculpture, Verity. From here, you can embark on a boat trip to Lundy Island, where you might spot seals, dolphins, porpoises and whales.
If you’re after local recommendations, Lewis and James are fountains of knowledge. A favourite spot is The Lime Kiln—a harbourside bar perfect for sipping Devon cider while watching the boats sail by. For dinner, head to The Hip at No. 8—where the inventive vegan menu includes nachos, plant-based steak baguettes and mouth-watering lamb kebabs.
Breakfast at The Earlsdale is another highlight. Served from 7:30 to 9:00am, it caters to all appetites. The continental spread includes fresh fruit, cereals, plant-based yoghurts and a variety of freshly-baked vegan treats like muffins and granary bread. The hot breakfast options are equally enticing, ranging from porridge to a vegan full English. While non-vegan options are available on request, veganism is the default here, making it a dream destination for plant-based travellers.
