In recent years, sustainability has become an increasingly important consideration for consumers seeking to make eco-friendly choices across all aspects of their lives. From the food we eat to the clothes we wear, there is a growing awareness of how our consumption affects the environment. This shift in mindset has extended to the world of bedding, where several brands are prioritising eco-consciousness without compromising on comfort. One such trailblazer in the industry is Duvet Hog, a British brand committed to producing sustainable, vegan-friendly duvets and pillows. In this article, we not only review the brand but also have a quick chat with founder Phillippa Barraclough to learn more about her inspiration for creating such an incredible business.
Why sustainable bedding matters
Conventional bedding often comes with a high environmental cost. The filling of traditional duvets and pillows is typically made from down feathers, harvested from ducks or geese, or synthetic materials derived from petroleum. Not only does the use of down raise ethical concerns about animal welfare, but synthetic materials are also non-biodegradable, contributing to landfill waste and microplastic pollution. Considering the water and energy required to produce bedding, it becomes clear why more and more people are seeking greener alternatives.
Sustainable bedding aims to reduce the environmental impact of these products by using materials that are either recycled, renewable, or both. Beyond the planet-friendly benefits, sustainable options often provide practical advantages, such as hypoallergenic properties and improved durability, making them an appealing choice for those who care about their health and comfort as much as the environment.
Duvet Hog: The future of eco-friendly comfort
Duvet Hog
Leading the charge in sustainable bedding is Duvet Hog, a brand that embodies a perfect balance of comfort and eco-consciousness. Duvet Hog has reimagined what it means to sleep well, creating products that are as gentle on the planet as they are on your skin. Their duvets and pillows are cruelty-free, made from their unique EcoPuff® fill—a blend of recycled fibres that offer all the benefits of traditional down without harming any animals. In fact, every Duvet Hog duvet keeps 120 plastic bottles out of landfill, while their pillows recycle between 40 and 53 bottles, depending on the firmness chosen.
The brand’s mission is simple: to offer superior sleep products that don’t cost the earth, literally. Duvet Hog’s duvets are soft, light, and breathable, designed to regulate temperature and keep you comfortable whether it’s summer or winter. They’re also machine-washable and tumble-dryer friendly, even in king and super king sizes, so they stay fresh for longer without the need for frequent replacement. For VegClub readers, there’s an extra reason to celebrate—use the code VEGCLUBMAG to get 10% off Duvet Hog’s range of duvets and pillows, ensuring both a good night’s sleep and a lighter footprint on the planet.
VegClub (VC): Duvet Hog uses recycled bottles and avoids animal-based materials in its EcoPuff® fill. Can you share how EcoPuff® was developed and what role sustainability played?
Phillippa Barraclough (PB): Our EcoPuff® fill takes inspiration from feather and down duvets. These duvets blend down with some feathers, providing both softness and structure. No one likes a flat duvet (looking at you, bamboo). So, we blend recycled fibres—some designed for softness and others to give the fill loft. This mix mimics the support feathers provide in traditional down bedding. This unique blend gives our duvet a cloud-like loft while staying soft and cosy. We also prioritised safety and health by ensuring our duvets meet Oeko-Tex Standard 100, Class 1, meaning they are free from harmful chemicals.
We also avoid plastic packaging, opting instead for reusable fabric bags, cardboard boxes and tissue paper. Eco-friendly, chemical-free comfort without cutting corners—that’s our promise.
The science behind EcoPuff® fill
One of the standout features of Duvet Hog products is their innovative EcoPuff® fill. This ultra-soft material is made from spun recycled PET plastic, the same type of plastic found in water bottles. Through an eco-conscious process, these bottles are transformed into fibres that mimic the light, fluffy feel of down. The result is a duvet that’s warm yet breathable, offering all the luxurious comfort of traditional down bedding without the ethical and environmental concerns.
EcoPuff® also ensures that Duvet Hog’s duvets and pillows are hypoallergenic, making them an ideal choice for individuals with allergies or sensitive skin. Certified by Oeko-Tex Standard 100, these products are free from harmful chemicals, providing peace of mind that they are safe for even the most vulnerable members of your household.
A commitment to zero waste
Duvet Hog’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond their choice of materials. Their products are manufactured in an eco-factory that runs on 100% renewable energy and produces zero waste. The brand’s emphasis on durability means their bedding is designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and thereby cutting down on landfill waste. For those inevitable spills and stains, Duvet Hog duvets and pillows can be washed at home and come out like new, eliminating the need for premature disposal.
In a time when many duvets end up in landfill because they cannot be recycled, Duvet Hog is setting a new standard. They encourage customers to wash and refresh their bedding rather than throw it away, furthering their commitment to a circular, low-waste economy. As the brand likes to say, “comfy doesn’t happen by accident”. It’s the result of thoughtful design, ethical choices and a passion for doing things differently.
VC: Your duvets are hypoallergenic, washable, and long-lasting. How does Duvet Hog address bedding waste, and what impact do you hope to have on consumer habits?
PB: We’re not claiming to have solved the waste problem completely, but we’re working on it. We design our duvets to be recyclable and the casing is also made from upcycled plastic, so we use the same material for the main components. This is essential for recycling at end-of-life. The good news? SATCoL (Salvation Army Trading Company) launched the UK’s first polyester recycling centre this April. We’re already discussing how they can process used duvets, including ours.
The current issue is that many duvets end up discarded either because they’re cheap, don’t wash well or need expensive commercial cleaning. Low-quality polyester duvets, for instance, are often replaced every 6 to 12 months when they get dirty, as washing leads to clumping and poor results, making replacement cheaper than commercial laundering. Feather and down duvets are more durable but difficult to dry at home, often needing commercial care to prevent mildew and odour. So, while these options may seem sustainable, they come with their own environmental trade-offs—from cruelty issues to unsustainable casings made from conventional cotton (not organic cotton).
With DUVET HOG®, we offer a different approach: cruelty-free, breathable and home-washable duvets that provide comfort without compromise. The biggest shift we want to see? People buying less and choosing better. As Vivienne Westwood said, “Buy less, choose well”. It takes time to change habits, but that’s the direction we’re here for.
Comfy and posh: The best duvet in the UK is vegan

When selecting the perfect duvet, both materials and craftsmanship significantly impact comfort and sustainability. Duvet Hog excels in these areas, offering luxurious and environmentally responsible products.
Their duvets feature a casing made from 100% GRS-certified recycled polyester and filling from EcoPuff® polyester, transforming around 120 used plastic bottles into silky-soft bedding. With Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, their duvets are safe for everyone, including babies.
Sustainability is a priority; produced in a zero-waste eco-factory in Estonia powered by renewable energy, their cruelty-free ethos ensures ducks and geese retain their feathers. Designed for maximum comfort, Duvet Hog’s extra-fluffy duvets have temperature-regulating properties and hypoallergenic features.
Machine-washable for easy maintenance, they maintain warmth without cold spots. Duvet Hog offers free UK delivery within 1-2 days, and VegClub readers can use the code VEGCLUBMAG for a 10% discount, promoting sustainable living without compromising on quality.

Just as impressive as their duvets, Duvet Hog’s pillows offer unparalleled comfort without sacrificing sustainability. Available in two options—medium and medium/soft—the pillows are designed to cradle your head in cloud-like softness while providing essential support. Like the duvets, the pillows are filled with recycled fibres, with the medium/soft version containing 40 recycled plastic bottles and the medium version recycling 53.

The pillow cover is made from 100% cotton with a percale weave, allowing for better airflow and ensuring you stay cool throughout the night. The entire pillow is machine-washable and hypoallergenic, making it easy to maintain and safe for all skin types. With Duvet Hog, you can rest assured that your sleep setup is as good for the planet as it is for your health. The best pillow for royalty—or for humble folks like our VegClub team.
VC: Duvet Hog’s mission includes reducing waste and protecting animals. How do you balance ethical production with competitive pricing in the UK bedding market?
PB: We’ll admit it—our duvets may cost a bit more, but that’s because we’re committed to doing things right. Were we to use virgin materials, we could reduce costs, but we focus on responsibly sourced, verified recycled materials. Recycling, for us, doesn’t mean reclaiming our own factory waste. We use post-consumer plastic waste backed by Global Recycling Standard certification. This ensures fair wages, ethical practices and quality from start to finish.
As a B Corp-certified company, we consider the impact on people, animals and the planet in every step of production. So, yes, we are a bit more costly, but we’re built for a lighter footprint and a cleaner, kinder sleep—without the feather fluff.
