Exploring Europe’s top 10 greenest countries and their environmental commitment
While Europe is widely recognised as a green continent, certain countries stand out for their exceptional environmental practices. A recent study by Hemsol, a solar energy company, identified Europe’s top 10 greenest countries based on various factors such as renewable energy share, recycling rates and carbon dioxide emissions, putting Norway at the top of the list.
1. Norway
Norway tops the list as Europe’s most environmentally friendly country. Despite high per capita carbon dioxide emissions and extensive farmland, Norway’s impressive renewable energy share in 2022 secured its top ranking. Oslo is the primary reason for Norway’s recognition.
2. Austria
Austria ranks second, owing to its citizens’ preference for public transport, which significantly reduces car usage. The country also boasts a high recycling rate and a strong commitment to the Paris Agreement, although it ranks sixth in carbon dioxide emissions.
3. Finland
Finland is third, largely due to the implementation of a new Climate Act on 1 July 2022. This Act sets ambitious emission reduction targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2035.
4. Iceland
Iceland ranks fourth, noted for its low carbon dioxide emissions and the highest rate of renewable energy share among the top ten. Its updated Climate Action Plan targets carbon neutrality before 2040 and a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
5. Sweden
Sweden completes the top five, recognised for its extensive woodland areas and the second-highest renewable energy usage. The country aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, with at least an 85% reduction from 1990 levels.
Northern Europe’s environmental leadership

The study reveals that six of the countries in the top 10 are Northern European, with all Scandinavian countries featuring in the top five. This highlights their commitment to the environmental cause more than any other region in Europe, evident both in the data and the practical regulations implemented domestically and internationally.
